Social Communication
Being social is a complex process. We must “read” the social situation so we know what to do and what to say, quickly understand and remember what others are saying, monitor body language, and understand the sound of our communicative partners’ voices.
Does she really mean what she actually said? Changes in pitch or emphasis on words can change the meaning of what is said and, of course, if one uses ambiguous language or idioms, socializing becomes very complex. When the teacher says, “Eyes on me,” most students know that he meant “pay attention.” Yet, some of us are confused and continually try to understand what was meant. In addition, there are a “hidden” set of rules and expectations that others assume we know. Many of us easily understand, but others who don’t are often deemed to not be trying or being disrespectful.
At Neurotech Solutions, we work with our students in a calm, trusting, and positive learning environment, address any roadblocks that are getting in the way of being social, and learn the rules and expectations of being social in various environments and social situations that are important to them. Our students practice communicating with others, go out and try what has been learned, come back and evaluate what happened, and continue to learn how to make social interactions more enjoyable and successful.
